Young people starting university or other higher education courses this autumn are being encouraged to get vaccinated against meningococcal B (MenB), following a meningitis B outbreak in Kent earlier this year.
Meningococcal disease can cause serious illnesses such as meningitis and septicaemia. Students are at increased risk when they start university because they often live, study and socialise closely with large groups of people.

The NHS is offering the MenB vaccine to:
Year 13 students aged 17-18 who were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008.
Young people aged 24 and under who are starting university or certain types of residential further education.
How to get your MenB vaccination
The vaccine is being delivered through the NHS vaccination programme and participating pharmacies/vaccination sites, NOT through GP practices. Eligible patients can access the vaccine through the NHS booking system or designated walk-in services from 20th July 2026.
